Program Update: Fresh Fruit and Produce
May 30, 2024
As we approach the 2024 outdoor market season (starting June 1st, 2024), we want to inform all market managers, volunteers, and vendors about significant updates and reminders for the Double Dollars program.
Key Changes Effective April 13th, 2024
As of April 13th, 2024, only fruits and vegetables will be eligible for Double Dollars reimbursements. This shift means participants can no longer redeem Double Dollars tokens for items outside this category. The decision, while challenging, aims to ensure the program’s sustainability for future seasons.
New Reporting Requirements
Additionally, the Community Action Coalition (CAC) will now require Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) reporting/surveying for both new and returning clients. This effort is to gather better demographic data for grants and reporting purposes.
Detailed Fruits and Vegetables Update
To comply and align with local and national nutrition incentive program standards, Double Dollars will adopt a fruits and vegetable nutrition incentive model. Here’s what this includes:
Eligible for Double Dollars:
- Fresh, canned, dried, or frozen fruits and vegetables without added sugars, fats, oils, or salt.
- Edible seeds (e.g., sunflower and pumpkin seeds), fresh herbs, traditional subsistence fruits and vegetables, and wild edible and medicinal plants.
- Beans, mushrooms, peas, and lentils.
- Plant starts (eligible for Double Dollars reimbursement for 2024, subject to future funding changes).
Not Eligible for Double Dollars:
- Meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, breads and cereals, snack foods, and non-alcoholic beverages.
- Peanuts and hazelnuts.
- Seasonings, sauces, and preserves like pickles and jams.
SNAP/EBT Items
The Farmer Market SNAP SCRIP program will still cover all SNAP/EBT items, including fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, breads and cereals, snack foods, and non-alcoholic beverages.
These updates are designed to better align the Double Dollars program with established nutritional standards and ensure its continued success. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we implement these important changes. Together, we can continue to support our community with fresh, nutritious food options.
