Celebrating 60 Years: The Food Stamp Act of 1964

August 31, 2024

President Johnson signing the Food Stamp Act of 1964.

Today, we commemorate a pivotal moment in American history—60 years ago, on August 31, 1964, the Food Stamp Act was signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. This landmark legislation was a cornerstone of Johnson’s Great Society initiative, aimed at addressing poverty and inequality in the United States. In his State of the Union speech earlier that year, Johnson emphasized the need for a permanent food stamps program, moving beyond the series of pilot projects that had been in place since FDR’s New Deal.

When signing the Food Stamp Act of 1964, President Johnson declared, “It is one of many sensible and needed steps we have taken to apply the power of America’s new abundance to the task of building a better life for every American… As a permanent program, the food stamp plan will be one of our most valuable weapons for the war on poverty.” These words reflect the enduring mission of the program, now known as SNAP, which continues to provide low-income families with the resources they need to secure healthy, affordable food.

At Community Action Coalition (CAC), we see the lasting impact of this program every day. Our Double Dollars initiative builds on the foundation laid by the Food Stamp Act, enhancing SNAP benefits to ensure that families can access fresh, local produce at farmers markets. This not only addresses immediate hunger but also promotes long-term health and well-being.

As we celebrate 60 years of progress, we honor the vision behind the Food Stamp Act and recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight against poverty. The program has been a lifeline for millions, providing stability and hope for a better future. Let’s continue to work together to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive, today and for generations to come.
