Plant A Row for the Hungry

Launched in 1995, Plant A Row is a public service program of the Garden Writers Association and the GWA Foundation. Garden writers are asked to encourage their readers/listeners to plant an extra row of produce each year and donate their surplus to local food banks, soup kitchens and service organizations to help feed America’s hungry. For more information on this program visit their website. For more information on sharing your own garden harvest locally see our brochure.

This summer in an effort to increase the supply of fresh produce for Dane County food pantries, CAC and Olds Seed Solutions are sponsoring the Plant a Row for the Hungry - Neighborhood Challenge, a friendly competition for neighborhood associations to collect extra produce from home gardeners to donate to local hunger relief agencies. Neighborhood associations can contact Shelly Strom at 246-4730 ext. 209 or to enter the Neighborhood Challenge. The neighborhood association with the most donated produce will receive a $200 cash prize from Olds Seed Solutions at the Mayor's Neighborhood Roundtable in November.

Use our interactive map to find the closest drop off location for your produce donations. The map contains all food pantries, free meal sites, and subsidized or senior housing that accept donations. Simply type your address in the box at the top right of the map, and you will receive directions to the nearest drop off site. Please keep in mind that these agencies want good quality fresh produce from your home garden or garden program. Please wash the produce, and organize or package it according to the agency's needs. If it is your first time donating to an agency, please refer to Growing and Sharing –Where to Donate to view their availability to receive your produce. Thank you for taking the time to help your neighbors in need!"
