Success Story: Loucretia

Due to agencies such as Community Action Coalition, Dane County Housing Authority, other community agencies and the persistent encouragement of their staff, I became involved with my case worker Jasmine and Community Action Coalition.

It was through a program called Family Self-Sufficiency where participants are selected through a lottery process with the housing authorities.  My name was pulled, I went through the process and here I am.

When I first came to Community Action Coalition at the age of 51 years old and met Jasmine, I was working at Big Lots making $8.25 an hour.  I wasn’t really happy but content.  I have to admit that I was afraid when I first started the program and didn’t believe that I would accomplish much at all.

After meeting Jasmine and hearing her tell me, “You can do it” I began to believe it.

We started off small with things like setting up the voicemail on my phone.  She has pointed me in the direction of so many free community resources to help me along this journey.  To date, I have completed a high quality resume, attended a basic computer workshop, set up a business email account and purchased a vehicle.

My ultimate goal is to one day work as a Receptionist/Administrative Assistant with a livable wage, set schedule and benefits.  Without the encouragement of Jasmine, her “You can do it” attitude and the Community Action Coalition staff, I don’t know if I would have accomplished all that I have and all that I will.
